Centre for Business and Society

The Centre for Business and Society (CBS), part of the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB), serves as a dynamic platform at the intersection of business and societal challenges. Guided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 SDGs, CBS collaborates with diverse stakeholders—including business leaders, government, policymakers, and academics—to address pressing challenges and promote sustainable practices. CBS is committed to inclusivity and giving a voice to marginalised communities, with activities aimed at fostering a positive social impact.

Activities

CBS Ambassadors for Change Programme

The fifth installment of the annual 'Educate. Enlighten. Empower.' programme, a collaboration between CBS and The Citizens Foundation, ran from January 7 to April 7, 2024. This three-month initiative enriched over 70 TCF alumni with a curriculum focused on English and Mathematics to enhance university-level test-taking skills, alongside essential soft skills like presentation, critical thinking, and problem-solving. The programme engaged 22 volunteers from all five LUMS schools, offering weekend classes, IQ and EQ development activities, and workshops by the LUMS Consultancy Group. A robust impact assessment with pre and post-tests evaluated the programme’s effectiveness, culminating in an Eid celebration.

Winner of the RASTA Grant

In March 2024, CBS won the RASTA (Research for Social Transformation and Advancement) grant by PIDE (Pakistan Institute of Development Economics). The grant project ‘Impact Assessment of TDAP Women Development Programme on Technology Adaptation in Women Entrepreneurs’ will span across six months with its initiation in April 2024. Dr. Misbah Tanveer Choudhry (Faculty Director, CBS and Assistant Professor, SDSB) is the Principal Investigator on the grant. The project is aimed at increasing the understanding of women entrepreneurs and the growing intersection between their businesses and digital technology adoption.

Healthcare Management Conference: Journey to Quality Healthcare

The Conference on March 9, 2024 was held in collaboration with SDSB Communications Office and was spearheaded by Dr. Hassan Rauf (Assistant Professor) and Kashif Khan (Executive in Residence). The one-day event brought together expert stakeholders from the field of professional healthcare, policymaking, and academia to host discussions on navigating and advancing healthcare in Pakistan.

Fund 4 Impact: Volume II

In 2022, CBS introduced the Fund 4 Impact, a Research Grant Programme aimed at advancing research with sustainable impact. The grant, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals, was available to all LUMS students involved in research for their academic and degree requirements. On September 1, 2023, during the programme's second round (2023-2024), the Centre selected four students from undergraduate and graduate levels. Each winner focused on a distinct theme: health, clean energy, education, and gender equality, following widespread student registration.

MoU signing ceremony between CBS and Kaarvan Crafts Foundation

On March 5, 2024, CBS renewed its commitment to empowering women microentrepreneurs by signing an MoU with Kaarvan Crafts Foundation. This partnership, rooted in a long-standing collaboration, aims to develop the business skills of female micro entrepreneurs across Pakistan, focusing particularly on women-owned microbusinesses in various districts.

From 2022 to 2024, under this visionary collaboration, CBS and the Foundation completed three workshop programmes. These workshops have benefited over 90 women from Pakistan’s product and service industries. Additionally, the programme integrates LUMS students from the graduate programmes of SDSB as ‘Volunteer Coaches’, with 29 students having participated so far.

The MoU ceremony was attended by key figures including Dr. Ali Cheema, Vice Chancellor of LUMS; Dr. Fazal Jawad Seyyed, Dean of SDSB; and Danish Khan, Founder and CEO of Kaarvan Crafts Foundation, along with teams from CBS and Kaarvan Crafts Foundation. Dr. Cheema praised the programme’s vision and its reciprocal learning framework, noting its alignment with LUMS’ core values of community development at grassroots levels.

Lenin in 2024: Speaker Session by Rob Sewell

The speaker, Rob Sewell is the Author and Editor of Socialist Appeal. The session held in March 2024 explored the enduring relevance of Vladimir Lenin's ideas in today's world. The talk also delved into how the current global challenges can be addressed by embracing Leninist principles. Drawing from his extensive involvement in Britain's labour movement and political landscape over the past five decades, Mr. Sewell also shed light on the ongoing economic crisis in Britain, now exacerbated by recessionary trends.

Christmas Movie Night

CBS celebrated Christmas by hosting a Movie Night for LUMS staff and their families on December 18, 2023. The event featured separate movie screenings for parents and children, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere. After the movies, a Talent Show allowed children to perform poems and stories on stage. Goodie bags were distributed to the children at the end of the show. The festive evening concluded with a Christmas cake cutting ceremony and remarks from Dean of SDSB, Dr. Fazal Jawad, who praised the community spirit and highlighted the importance of respect and harmony among all communities.

Smog Awareness Session for the MBM Staff

On November 14, 2023, CBS and Campus Health at LUMS organised a Smog Awareness session for the campus cleaning staff, who are highly exposed to smog's hazardous effects. The session, in partnership with IMC Hospital, was led by Dr. G. Sarwar Chaudhry, a pulmonologist at IMC Hospital. He discussed the causes, health impacts of smog, and shared at-home precautions and treatments. KN95 masks were distributed to the staff to help mitigate the effects of smog exposure.

Dengue Awareness Session

On September 20, 2023, CBS hosted an awareness session on dengue prevention led by Dr. Zahra Shehzad, a medical officer at National Hospital. Targeted at the university's cleaning staff, the session aimed to educate these frontline workers about dengue’s causes, symptoms, and both individual and community prevention techniques. The interactive discussion addressed the audience's concerns about the outbreak and its effects, concluding successfully with the staff gaining essential knowledge on effective dengue prevention methods.

Soft Skills Workshop Series with LUMS Consultancy Group

CBS collaborated with the LUMS Consultancy Group to host a two-part workshop series on February 25 and March 2, 2024, as part of the 5th cycle of the Ambassadors for Change Programme. This ongoing partnership enables CBS's Social Impact Project department to develop and deliver workshops focusing on soft skills such as problem-solving, presentation abilities, and critical thinking. The primary beneficiaries are alumni of The Citizens Foundation, who participate as students in this three-month programme. The workshop series features presentations on key concepts, real-life examples, interactive activities, and group presentations, aligning with CBS's mission to develop comprehensive educational programmes that enhance both academic and soft skills.

Business Speaker Session Series

In February 2024, CBS hosted two speaker sessions for the MBA students at SDSB, featuring insights from industry and entrepreneurial experts. The first session, led by the Business Development Manager at Sapphire, focused on vertical integration, business development strategies, product diversification, and sustainable practices. The second session was conducted by the CEO of Diet by Design, who discussed her shift from civil services to entrepreneurship, sharing her journey and important considerations for managing start-up risks.

Policy Dialogue Session

On January 26, 2024, the Centre partnered with the Social Welfare & Bait-ul-Maal Department (SW&BM), Punjab for a one-day Policy Dialogue Session at SDSB. The session aimed to draft a 'Social Welfare Policy' for SW&BM and attracted stakeholders from academic, government, and judicial sectors. The event included presentations on SW&BM's programmes and policies, followed by a group activity where participants, divided by domain, developed policy proposals for various social development programmes addressing issues like poverty, domestic abuse, and homelessness. Notable attendees included Dean of SDSB, Dr. Fazal Jawad Seyyed, Mr. Mudassir Riaz Malik (Director General, SW&BM, Punjab), and Mr. Zahoor Hussain (Secretary, SW&BM, Punjab). Groups presented pragmatic approaches for provincial implementation, focusing on enhancing grassroots impact and accessibility.

#JoiningHandsofKindness: Visit to an Old Age Home

On September 22, 2023, CBS organised a volunteer-led visit to an Old Age Home, emphasising its commitment to social service, empathy, and responsibility. Five students from LUMS joined the CBS team to engage with the elderly residents, aiming to infuse their routines with positivity and hope. The visit featured a variety of activities to foster an energetic and enthusiastic environment. Student volunteers led board games and facilitated discussions where elderly residents shared their life stories, promoting comfort and solidarity among them. Additionally, the CBS team prepared care-kits, which included literature books for the residents' enjoyment, and these were distributed by the volunteers. This initiative was part of CBS's broader commitment to cultivating compassion and empathy through its extensive volunteer programmes, aiming to contribute to the development of sustainable communities in Pakistan.

Pinktober 2023: A Breast Cancer Awareness Event

LUMS collaborated with Pink Ribbon, Pakistan, Cancer Care Hospital and Research Centre, and Dr. Essa Laboratory to host ‘#PinkTogether: A Breast Cancer Awareness Event’ on October 27, 2023. This comprehensive event, organised by CBS, Human Resources, Campus Health, and LUMS Community Service Society (LCSS), aimed to educate the community about breast cancer, destigmatise the topic, and offer health incentives like free mammography to the LUMS female community. The day featured a medical camp at the LUMS Medical Centre offering services at discounted rates. The main event, co-hosted by HR and CBS, included a panel discussion with experts in surgery, oncology, psychology, and philanthropy, partnered with Pink Ribbon, Pakistan and IMC Hospital. The discussion covered symptoms, treatment, survivorship, and the psychological impact on caregivers. Following the panel, a breast cancer surgeon led a self-check tutorial to teach women how to conduct self-exams at home to detect breast cancer early. The event concluded with an awareness walk led by LCSS students, who carried pink posters with motivational slogans to raise awareness across the campus.

#BridgingTheGap: Digital Skills Literacy Workshop for Female Microentrepreneurs

CBS launched the third volume of its flagship programme ‘#BridgingTheGap: Business Skills Workshop for Female Microentrepreneurs’ on February 24-25, 2024, at SDSB. Focused on digital marketing, this two-day event, in partnership with Kaarvan Crafts Foundation and Women in Business, LUMS, was led by Dr. Misbah Tanveer and funded by the Syed Babar Ali Foundation. It attracted 39 female microentrepreneurs from regions including Multan, Kasur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Gujranwala, and Lahore. The workshop, featuring 15 SDSB Volunteer Trainers, covered practical skills like WhatsApp Business, Facebook, Instagram, customer negotiation, and catalogue photography.

The programme concluded with an Exhibition Ceremony, where participants showcased their products to the LUMS community, with closing remarks from notable figures including Dr. Fazal Jawad Seyyed, Daanish Khan (CEO and Founder of Kaarvan Crafts Foundation), and Henna Babar Ali (Syed Babar Ali Foundation and Packages Ltd.).
